Selous Game Reserve

Tanzania is home to one of the world’s largest single populations of elephants. The Selous Game Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to the majority of these elephants. Frederick Courtenay Selous, a keen naturalist and conservationist as well as a hunter, was the inspiration for the name.

More About Selous Game Reserve

In the Reserve’s Beho Beho region, he was killed in the First World War.

The Reserve is the largest in Africa, larger than Switzerland, and second only to the Serengeti in terms of wildlife concentration. Rolling savannah woodland, grassland plains, and rocky outcrops make up the Reserve’s terrain. There are also buffalo, crocodiles, hippopotamuses, and wild dogs to be found here.

The Reserve is accessible by road, air charter, and rail (Tazara) from Dar-es-Salaam, and the best time to visit is between the end of June and the end of October during the cool season. Walking safaris in the company of an armed guard are available from the Reserve’s camps.
