Ngorongoro Conservation Area
The famous Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact caldera, forming a spectacular bowl of about 265 square kilometers with sides up to 600 meters deep, and the stalking ground of around 20,000 to 30,000 wild animals at any given time. Grassland, swamps, lerai forest (small patches of forest made up of yellow barked acacia or ‘yellow fever tree’), and Lake Makat, a central soda lake filled by the Munge river, are among the ecological environments found on the crater floor.
More About Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Despite the fact that animals are free to move in and out of this contained environment, the rich volcanic soil, lush forests, and spring source lakes on the crater floor tend to incline both grazers and predators to stay. Ngorongoro Crater is also one of the best places in Tanzania to see the endangered Black Rhino, and a small population thrives in this idyllic and protected environment – one of the few places in the world where they can still breed in the wild. As a result, the crater contains an amazing microcosm of East African wildlife, and is said to be Africa’s most densely packed wildlife concentration.
As a result, it has gained international acclaim and attracts an increasing number of visitors each year who come to see this “eighth wonder of the world.” Even if you only have a short amount of time, this natural but easily accessible small caldera will provide a rewarding safari.
Inside the famous Ngorongoro Crater, which is unique and diverse, a tardis-like effect occurs because it is surprisingly small once inside, and most people find that one day is enough to drive around. Because of its size in comparison to the Serengeti’s vast expanse, you may see a lot of other vehicles. The road into the crater is closed from the outside. Its rim, at over 2,200 meters, is surrounded by clouds for most of the year, with cool high altitude vapours that seem to bring a clean lightness to the air, as well as a chill. In most months, except during the high dry season in December and January, the highlands are blanketed in a misty fog.
